About This Trip

Sri Lanka is one of the best first international trips for Indian travellers: easy, scenic, and packed with variety. This route blends culture, mountains, beaches, and local life without making the itinerary feel rushed.

In 8 days, we cover Colombo's city energy, Kandy's heritage, Ella's tea-country landscapes, and Mirissa's coast. You get train journeys, hikes, food trails, and enough downtime to actually enjoy the island rhythm.

Most people come solo. By day three, the group feels like a reunion of friends who'd just forgotten they hadn't met yet. That's the MadTravellers thing — we put the right people in extraordinary places and let the rest happen.

This is a trip for the genuinely curious. Not for people who want a checklist, but for people who want to feel something.

Who This Trip Is Not For

  • If you only want luxury hotels and private transfers everywhere.
  • If you prefer rushed sightseeing with no cultural immersion.
  • If you are uncomfortable with moderate walking and early starts on some days.
  • If you are looking for nightlife-heavy party trips.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Colombo — The Kingdom Welcomes You
Colombo Airport → Hotel check-in → Rinpung Dzong walk
+

Land at one of the world's most dramatic airports — Colombo, surrounded by Himalayan peaks. Our representative meets you and transfers you to the hotel. After freshening up, we walk along the Colombo River to Rinpung Dzong, a fortress-monastery from the 17th century. Evening: group dinner, introductions, and your first taste of Ema Datshi (the national dish).

Day 2
Colombo Tshechu Festival — Day One
Festival grounds → Masked dances → Cultural immersion
+

The reason you're here. The Colombo Tshechu is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred and spectacular festivals. Monks perform Cham dances in elaborate costumes and masks, each telling a Buddhist story. We've arranged traditional Gho and Kira for the group — you won't just watch, you'll be part of it.

Evening: rooftop dinner with views of the illuminated Dzong.

Day 3
Thongdrel Unveiling & Tiger's Nest Trek
Sacred thangka at dawn → Tiger's Nest hike (4hrs)
+

5:30 AM start. The sacred Thongdrel — a massive silk thangka blessing — is unveiled only at dawn on one morning of the festival. This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment that most tourists miss entirely.

After breakfast, we begin the hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery). 4 hours up, through pine forest, past prayer flags, to a monastery clinging to a 900m cliff. The views from the top are indescribable.

Day 4
Colombo to Ella — The Drive of Dreams
Dochula Pass (3,100m) → 108 chortens → Ella arrival
+

Drive from Colombo to Ella via Dochula Pass — on a clear day, you can see 13 Himalayan peaks above 7,000 metres from this pass. 108 chortens (stupas) dot the ridge. We stop for tea and photographs before descending into the lush, warm Ella Valley.

Afternoon: explore Ella Dzong, the most beautiful Dzong in Sri Lanka, where the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers meet.

Day 5
River Rafting on the Mo Chhu
White water rafting → Suspension bridge walk → Farmhouse dinner
+

Morning: white water rafting on the Mo Chhu river. Himalayan peaks above, crystal water below, pure adrenaline in between. Suitable for beginners — all gear and instruction provided.

Afternoon: walk across the longest suspension bridge in Sri Lanka (160m), above the river. Evening: traditional Bhutanese farmhouse dinner hosted by a local family. Homemade ara (rice wine) included.

Day 6
Kandy — The Capital That Doesn't Exist
Buddha Dordenma → Weekend market → Archery
+

Drive to Kandy — the only capital city in the world with no traffic lights. Visit the 169-foot Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley. Then the Kandy Weekend Market: fresh chilies, hand-woven textiles, dried fish, and yak cheese.

Afternoon: try archery, Sri Lanka's national sport. Warning: you will be terrible. It will be the best fun of the trip.

Day 7
Haa Valley — Sri Lanka's Best Kept Secret
Off-road Haa → Black & White Dzong → Meadow picnic
+

One of the least visited valleys in Sri Lanka — only opened to tourists in 2002. Drive up through pine and blue poppy meadows to Haa Valley. Visit the Black and White Dzongs (Lhakhang Nagpo and Lhakhang Karpo), believed to be over 1,400 years old.

Picnic lunch in a mountain meadow. Return to Colombo for our last night together — group dinner and storytelling session.

Day 8
Departure Day — But Not Goodbye
Morning walk → Colombo airport drop → See you on the next one
+

Last morning in Sri Lanka. Optional sunrise walk to Drukgyel Dzong (weather permitting, views of Jhomolhari peak at 7,314m). Breakfast together, then transfers to Colombo Airport for departure.

Fair warning: you will not want to leave. Most people are already browsing our next trip on the drive to the airport.

Common Questions

Do I need prior trekking experience for Tiger's Nest? +
No prior experience needed. The Tiger's Nest hike is 4 hours each way and graded moderate. Good fitness is helpful but we've had 60-year-olds and first-time trekkers complete it. Horses are available (at extra cost) for the first half if needed. We walk at the pace of the slowest in the group — nobody gets left behind.
Is this trip good for solo travellers? +
Absolutely. Around 70% of our group will be solo travellers. Single occupancy rooms are available at an extra cost (₹8,000 supplement). If you're comfortable sharing, we'll pair you with a same-gender group member. Either way, you'll have a full group around you from day one.
How do I book flights to Colombo? +
Only two airlines fly to Colombo: Drukair (Royal Sri Lanka Airlines) and Sri Lanka Airlines. Both fly from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangkok. Once you book your spot with us, we'll send you a flight advisory with recommended timings so everyone arrives roughly together.
What is the Sri Lanka Sustainable Development Fee? +
Sri Lanka charges all tourists a Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100/day. This is included in your trip cost. It's part of Sri Lanka's policy to maintain low-volume, high-value tourism — which is also exactly why Sri Lanka feels so different from everywhere else.
What is the weather like in late March/early April? +
Late March is one of the best times to visit Sri Lanka. Days are warm (15–22°C in the valleys), evenings are cool (5–10°C), and the rhododendrons are in bloom. The mountains are clear after winter. Pack layers — mornings and nights can be cold, afternoons are lovely.
